WORCESTER – Walter F. Keane, Sr., 95, of Colony Retirement Home III, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2015 at UMass Memorial – Belmont St. Campus in Worcester. Born and raised in Manhattan, NY, Walter was the son of Irish immigrants, Patrick and Susan (Brew) Keane, and lived the last seven years in Worcester.
His beloved wife of 50 years, Katherine (Walsh) Keane died in 1997. He leaves two sons, Walter F. Keane, Jr. and his wife, Louise of Merrimack, NH and John R. Keane of Rome, NY; five daughters, Patricia A. Corbett and her husband, Peter of Medford, Eileen M. Monte and her husband, Michael of Foster City, CA, Marguerite “Peggy” D. Snow and her husband, Jack of Holden, Rosemary T. Kesler and her husband, Jack of Strasburg, VA and Kathleen S. Reed and her husband, Jerry of Austin, TX; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way; many nephews and nieces. Besides his wife, Walter is predeceased by six brothers, Gerald, Eugene, Harold, James, John and George Keane, and a sister, Madeline Peck. He is survived by his sister, Helen Keane of Sidney, Ohio.
Walter attended Commerce High School in Manhattan and later played semi professional football with the Hollis Cardinals in New York City. At the age of 18, Walter enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served seven years prior to and during World War II. During World War II he served with the 328th/85th Infantry in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre. While there he received three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
In 1945, Walter married the love of his life, Katherine Walsh, and together they moved to East Islip, Long Island where they raised their seven children. They later lived 32 years in Bay Shore, Long Island until Katherine’s passing in 1997. Walter has been a resident at Colony III Retirement Home in Worcester for the last seven years where he made many treasured friends.
Walter worked for Republic Aviation Corp in Farmington Long Island for 31 years retiring in 1982 as Principal Administrator of Property Accountability. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore. He was a past president of Bay Shore/Chamber of Commerce and served as the assistant director of the Awixa Pond Art Center, both in Bay Shore. He was also a member of the Chester P. Tuttle Post 279 American Legion in Auburn. Walter was a lifelong Yankee’s fan, enjoyed bowling, and was known for his beautiful singing voice.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Walter’s family from 9 to 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 17 at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Re. 122A), Holden, followed by a procession to Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove Street, Worcester where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will take place on Wednesday at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, Long Island.
