HOLDEN – Wendell P. Butler, Jr., 86, of Holden, passed away peacefully at his son’s home in the arms of his loving wife on Friday, May 3, 2013 after an illness. Born in Worcester, Wendell was the son of Wendell P. and Mae W. (Fagerstrom) Butler and lived 57 years in Holden.
Wendell graduated from Worcester Boy’s Trade High School. In 1944, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He remained in the U.S. Navy Reserve until 1954. After returning home from the war, Wendell met and married Dorothy M. LaConte, and together they raised three children in Holden.
He worked 34 years with Heald Machine Company also known as Cincinnati Milacron in Worcester and retired at age 57. Wendell was never one to sit still and was always on the go. Wendell and Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed retirement and spent vast amounts of quality time with their children and grandchildren as well as gardening and traveling around the United States and throughout Europe. He served on the Holden Planning Board and was a member of the former Holden JC’s.
Wendell is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy M. (LaConte) Butler; a son, Wendell P. Butler III and his wife Beth of Woodstock CT; two daughters, Claudia Ezra and her husband Neal of Atlantic Beach, NY and Heidi Butler and her husband Gary Didio of Boston; a brother, Wayne Butler of Phoenix, AZ; a sister, Elinor Saarinen of Shrewsbury; four grandchildren, Alexander, Natalie, Sophia, and Wendell IV and many nephews and nieces. Wendell Jr. is predeceased by two sisters, Jean Cronin and Ellen Wright.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Wendell’s family from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a service honoring his life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
