William G. Walker, Sr.

RUTLAND – William “Bill” Walker passed peacefully at the age of 93. Born in Worcester, Bill purchased land on Turkey Hill Pond in Rutland in the fifties. He, with friends and relatives, built by hand a home intended on being a summer camp. Once finished, Bill and his wife Carlene decided this was the place to raise their family and have lived there ever since.

Bill had strong work ethics at an early age. He worked as a shoeshine boy, deliverer for an ice, coal and oil company and eventually a plumbing company. Bill pursued his career in plumbing, starting his own plumbing and heating business.

He served as Rutland’s town plumbing inspector for many years before retirement.

Bill joined the Massachusetts Army National guard in the late 40’s. He proudly served with the 181st Battalion for 21 years.

He was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Parish. Bill was an avid sportsman. He had many excursions in the U.S and Canada. He was a long-time member of the Rutland Sportsman’s Club.

Bill enjoyed growing fruit trees and vines at his home. He was an accomplished wine maker; using the fruits and berries he had grown. He was a member of the Worcester County Beekeepers Association.

Bill married the love of his life, Carlene Montville in 1954. Together they raised 3 children. As a family there were many trips in their travel trailer throughout the U.S. and Canada, always accompanied by a beagle.

After retirement Bill and Carlene traveled extensively from Alaska to Hawaii, Canada, Rome, Ireland and the Middle East were among their journeys. Bill is survived by his son, Willy and wife, Jineen, daughter, Kathy and husband, Paul, and son Bob and wife, Lisa. Bill leaves his loving grandchildren, Tricia, Robert, Jarred, Kevin and Nick along with great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his mother, Isabel, father, Carlisle, sister Shirley and brother, Donald. His wife of 67 years, Carlene, passed in 2022 with whom he is now joyfully reunited.

Bill lived a wonderfully full life and was active until his final days.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Bill’s “Angels”, Ellen, Laura, Lisa and Tracy. Their kindness and dedication allowed him to remain in his home until his final days. Thank you also to all the staff members of UMass/Memorial and Rose Monahan Hospice.
